In France, the musicians are a mix of professionals and amateurs and the festival policy is to give an equal place to amateur musicians, rock, jazz, singing and traditional music, all of which are given a chance to be heard alongside so-called "serious" music. This year's edition will pay homage to women and their contribution to music, under the theme "La musique au féminin" (The Woman Side of Music). In Paris, for the Nuits du Jazz au féminin Lisa Cat-Berro, Julie Saury, Jacynthe Jacquet and Tullia Morand will be performing at the Sunside and Baiser Salé bars. At Saint-Eustache church there will be a non-stop music for 36 hours, starting at 11am tomorrow with La Manufacture Vocale. Turzi, Jonathan Fitoussi, Dr Drone, Cheval Blanc, Joseph Leon and Bad Mama Dog will also be playing. The Palais Royal is putting on four artists Christine Salem, Madjo, and the two Spanish women Amparo Sanchez and Buika. Under the Louvre Pyramid, Paris orchestra will play a Nuit Américaine, with classics from West Side Story and An American in Paris. Troisième Lieu in the fourth arrondissement is holding a Girls on the rocks themed night with various rock bands and DJs such as Ariel Wizman and Manu le Malin. Gay variety singing act Podium Paris will be singing karaoke classics in Place des Vosges and there’s Middle-Eastern music at the Parvis de l'Institut du Monde Arabe. In the rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the group World of Gospel is performing three sets, or you can get Byzantine et Roman choral music recitals in the crypt of Saint-Sulpice. Various pop, rock and jazz acts will be on board the Paris Iéna boat, embarking from Port de Suffren at 6pm. At the Musée d'Orsay, Maîtrise de Radio France and the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France are playing. On the steps of the Opéra Garnier, Sciences d'Orsay’s faculty orchestra will play music from films such as Batman and James Bond and other classic pieces. Or you can go to the canal, where on the quai de Jemmapes you can choose between rock, electro, jazz, hip-hop and trip-hop. Action Fall Short, Stylokids, MotionLess, Turnsteack and Time for Soul are performing. Cannibale Café is a holding pop, soul and electro soirée and there’s world music at Bercy Village. Carmen Souza and Nazaré Pereira are in the programme. Place des Vins de France is host to MTV Shake your booty, with Féfé, Ben l’Oncle Soul, Cut Killer, China, Sheryfa Luna, L'algerino, Admiral T, Youssoupha and several others. At Kiosque à Musique in Place de la Nation, hip-hop freestyle Nation Dance Crew are on in the evening followed by the Eternity Gospel Choir an hour later. Place d'Italie, wheelchair musicians Staff Benda Bilili and several other rock acts are playing, while Ricard Live Music is putting on Hugh Coltman, Jil is Lucky, Curry and Coco and In the Club in Place Denfert Rochereau. Or there’s Japanese music at the maison du Japon from 7pm and at the Trois Baudets, in the 18th arrondissement, where Kakehashi, a Franco-Japanese group is playing. Dub step and reggae come in at Glazart (Porte de la Villette), with Revelation Hifi Soundsystem, Young Warrior and Peter Youthman. In the 20th arrondissement at the Bellevilloise, there’s pop with Pierre Souchon, Fantazio & Sarah Olivier, Amparo Sanchez, Théo Phan and others.
Lyon has dozens of events lined up, too, notably an electro soirée next to the Palais des Sports and various classical music events around town. Place Bellecour is hosting singers Tété and Dan Black and hip hop act Les Gourmets will be in concert at Place de la Bourse. In Marseille, there’s Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Rossini’s Barber of Seville and Charles Gounod’s ballet, the Nuit de Walpurgis. Classical music will be the Temple de l'Eglise Réformée deFrance, with rock at the Plage du Prado at the Atelier Juxtapoz.
In Switzerland, the festival is taking over the streets and squares of 40 French-speaking cities. Like every summer, Geneva and Lausanne feature hundreds of music performances and concerts.
In Belgium, this edition of the Music Festival offers the crowds 800 free concerts in Brussels and in 60 cities of Wallonia (French-speaking Belgium) to celebrate the summer solstice. This year the play bill will be varied once again. Classical music and electronic music are neighbors during one weekend, without forgetting the great evening party tonight on the Place des Palais in downtown Brussels.
In Quebec, the festival will delight crowds in Montreal and Quebec City, where the Fête de la Musique was introduced for the first time in 2008. Quebec City presents 40 concerts in 12 locations, while Montreal boasts 150 free concerts around its historic center (Vieux-Montreal).
